“Why Are Leaves Green?

The Science Behind Nature’s Paintbrush!

“Have you ever wondered why trees appear green? Let’s find out!”

Ever looked at a tree and wondered, “Why are all these leaves green?” 🌳 Why not blue or purple? Well, behind every green leaf is a mini science lab doing something magical called photosynthesis!

Let’s dig into the leafy mystery… 🕵️‍♀️

Meet the Star: Chlorophyll! 🍃

The green color in leaves comes from a special natural pigment called chlorophyll (say it like: klor-o-fill).

Chlorophyll helps plants make their own food. It’s like the chef in the kitchen of the plant. And guess what it uses to cook? – Sunlight!

WHERE DO CHLOROPHYLL STAY?

Chlorophyll are present inside tiny compartment in leaves called chloroplasts.

Inside the chloroplasts there are disc-shaped parts called thylakoids, which are stacked like pancakes in structures called grana. These stacks are where sunlight is captured fir photosynthessis.

The space around the grana is called the stroma, where the food-making reactions happen.

WHY GREEN, AND WHY NOT ANY OTHER COLOUR?!

The colour of all objects depend upon the kind of colour they abdorb and the colour they reflect back.

Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, but not all colors equally. It mostly absorbs red and blue light, and it reflects green light.

That reflected green light is what reaches our eyes — that’s why we see green!

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CHLOROPHYLL IN AUTUMN?

During winter and autumn, due to less sunlight, plants are not able to make much food. To conserve energy, they stop making new chlorophylls and older ones also gradually disappear.

IN SHORT...

Leaves are green because of chlorophyll, the superstar that helps plants make food using sunlight. It reflects green light, which is why we see them that color.

Next time you’re under a tree, remember — that little leaf above you is working hard to keep both the tree and you alive! 🌿💚

And they sacrifice their leaves in autumn to save themselves. 🫡
